In my last eNEWS editorial I spoke about the rising price of Pre-war Singers. This time, let’s look at the rising profile of Pre-war Singers in some of the most prestigious classic motoring events around the world…

La Festa Mille Miglia, Japan:

La Festa Mille Miglia, which began in 1997, has been the only international classic car tour in Asia since 2002 that meets the international standards recognized by the Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens (FIVA). The spirit of the festival, which promotes respect for tradition, staying young at heart, and friendship among participants, has remained unchanged in its fourteen years of operation. As the Confucian proverb goes, "we learn new things by studying the past". La Festa Mille Miglia continues to preserve and pass down this tradition and precious cultural assets—our historic vehicles—to future generations.

Kazumi Saito, long-time supporter of vintage racing and rallying in Japan, with co-pilot Yoshiko Sanada drove their ’35 model Singer Le Mans SS to 20th position in the 2010 event.

Le Mans Classic, France:

Organized by the ACO and Peter Auto, the Le Mans Classic is open to all models that participated in the original running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans between 1923 and 1979. Six grids are made up of 65 cars which race non-stop for 24 hours in 40 minute heats. Included is the world's largest infield show with cars displayed from almost every major European club.

On a number of occasions a cream '35 Le Mans and a green 1.5 Le Mans from Germany have competed, most recently in 2010, and a 1934 Nine Sports entered in 2006.

Mille Miglia Storica, Italy:

In 1977, to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the 1000 Miglia Cup, the Brescia Automobile Club decided to organise the 1000 Miglia Rally on local roads, as a regularity event with competitive speed trials - a format already adopted for the last three Mille Miglia races organised from 1958 to 1960, which were classified by the FIA as qualifying events for the European Rally Championship. Times have changed in the eighty years since the first 1000 Miglia Cup was contested in 1927. It was important for the revived event to appeal to the collective imagination of future motorists with an unusual race that could demonstrate the reliability of the classic standard production models taking part.

In 2003 Max & Raoul Bontempi entered in a green ’35 LM and a blue ’35 Le Mans competed in 2007.

Peking to Paris Rally, China to France:

In 1907 the first-ever trans-Continental motor-rally between Peking and Paris became an epic motoring challenge. Five cars set out from Peking, four made it to Paris to a tumultuous welcome and world-wide fame. They had set out to prove that man and machine could now go anywhere they hoped it would make borders between countries redundant.

The second Peking to Paris was not held until the summer of 1997, when on the 100th anniversary, after four years of careful preparations by the Endurance Rally Association, organisers planned a route tackled by nearly 300 competitors and officials through some of the world’s remotest terrain.

Nearly every Singer enthusiast in the world recalls the amazing feat of Dutchmen Wilhelmus Van Gemert and Johan De Swart in car number 20, a 1934 Singer Le Mans, who not only competed in the rally but went on to finish in an incredible 23rd position in 2007.

Last, but by no means least, let’s not forget the on-going efforts of the amazing Gibson Brothers from the UK, who, under the Gibson Racing Team banner have campaigned their beautiful ’37 B37 Sports around the world.

Hats off and Motor On gang!
