Re: Blown Head Gasket!
Mark, I think you are spot on with your theory about previous coolant in the exhaust. It's also possible you had a leak that sealed itself after the first heat/cooling cycle, but that seems pretty unlikely. So if it's not smoking and not losing coolant then I would enjoy the car. If something turns ...

Re: Blown Head Gasket!
Mark, A recurring head gasket issue is most likely due to other factors such as a warped head or uneven upper block surface. A careful check with a proper straightedge can check the block. With the head off, a machine shop can check that for you. Other possible causes might be incorrect or previousl...

Re: Exhaust Pipe
Scott,
Both the PM and email options seem to hang up on my end. Also, I don't see the Pm from you.
Anyway, drop an email to bitsobrits@me.com with your address and I'll send it out.

Re: Exhaust Pipe
I believe you will have to have them made up. It's a pretty simple pipe from the manifold to the muffler. I bought a mandrel bent 90 degree, then had the other required bend done by a local muffler shop. If you are need of a flange for the manifold end of the pipe, I had some made up for my 4AD from...

Re: 4AD Singer Bleeding Brakes
Stephen,
You have disconnected the brake rod to the rear mechanical brakes in order to isolate the hydraulic system, yes? If not, you are likely not getting a full stroke of the M/C. I found I was able to use an improvised lever to actuate the M/C while I operated the bleeder screws myself.

Stephen,
It's on the last page of the article with the fill up data. 2 pints (english pints I would suppose) as BRG indicated.

There is an old article from the Motor Trader that is downloadable from this very site. Go to the home page, then Misc, then Everything 4AD. The link is in the second sentence.
Or here is the direct link:http://www.singercars.com/4ax/motortrader.pdf
Quite a bit of very useful information.

Re: 4AD rocker arm adjuster screws & nuts
I found they are the same as used on the 650 Triumph twin motorcycles, Unit construction, as used from the early 60's to mid 70's. The Triumph pieces typically either have a square top or allen key top and are somewhat longer than the singer pieces, but they are readily available from many sources, ...

Re: '53 4AD front shocks
While I can't answer your question directly, I can tell you what I fit to my 4AD last year. They were shocks for a Chevy Luv pickup, and they fit well with very similar extended and collapsed length compared to the originals. The NAPA p/n is RR 94037.

Re: Building spark plug wires
Basically the screw cap/disc is used to press the conductor against a contact point in the distributor cap. If the wires are solid copper strip the insulation until only about .25" of the copper conductors are exposed. Slip on the screw fitting, then slip the bare copper through the slit in the...

Re: 54 roadster intake/ exhaust manifold
Yes, definitely. It can be a bear to remove if the head is very corroded. If so you can drill the head off, and once the manifold is removed the remnant should be easy to remove with mole grips.

Re: 4AD rocker adjustment
Well, here I am again posting a reply to my own question. When doing some maintenance on my Triumph bike (1966 TR6 Trophy 650cc), I noticed the similarity of the Triumph adjuster screw to that of the Singer. So I removed one and tried it in the car and it works great! The Triumph part has about two ...

4AD rocker adjustment
I have several rocker arm adjuster screws that are worn enough that they do not permit further tightening. Surely these screws are shared with other British cars as many use this type of adjustment. Can anyone tell me which other cars might work?
Thanks, Steve
