Re: New Project

I used to have a 1922 Star which had a very similar floor-board arrangement; even the Star, which was a very expensive car in its day, did not have holes for the handbrake and gear-lever - just U-shaped slots so that the floor-board slid into position from the back. The floor covering - carpet or ru...

Re: Hello

The Lucas Pull & Spin wiper motor was standard fitment on the Austin Ruby, so current from mid to late 1930s; an excellent unit which will be far more practical than the original vacuum wiper.

Re: The Saving of BMX 7...

David, The CRL sequence of numbers was issued by Cornwall County Council, the first number was issued in November 1936, and the final number (999) in February 1937, so CRL 157 will date from November 1936. Basically, each issuing authority, usually a County Council, was allocated a single, or pair o...

Re: New Project

A quick check to see if it's 180° out is to remove no1 spark plug, press your thumb over the hole, and turn the starting handle until you can feel the pressure building - you then know you have compression stroke on no1. Easy with the radiator off!

Re: Singer 1500 Ghia - Aigle

I don't know where the chopped roof story came from, other than the mention in Kevin Atkinson's history; Vaughan clearly had one car, the dark coloured coupe, and reputedly had a second, convertible, car (ref Kevin Atkinson's book) for racing. Personally, if he had a second car then I believe that w...

Re: Singer 1500 Ghia - Aigle

Reviving this old thread! I have long been fascinated by Italian stylists and coachbuilders, and have quite a sizeable file on all manner of cars; here is what I have on the Ghia Aigle Singers: It seems likely that at least five cars were built between 1952 and 1954; the first car was shown at the 1...

Re: Introduction Nine Sports and clutch question

The problem is modern film renders colours rather differently from those of the 1930s. Kodak introduced panchromatic film in the early 1930s; prior to that the film only reacted to the blue part of the spectrum - say turquoise through blue to purple. Practically any other colour will be rendered as ...

Re: The Saving of BMX 7...

As we know, in the UK, it is very possible the car was actually registered as a '34 If it was built and sold prior to January 1st ,1935, even though it is a '35 model year, and this is probably why Wayne advertised it as much. BMX-7 was probably issued to the car in late 1934 judging from the numbe...

Re: Introduction Nine Sports and clutch question

... It looks like the spare wheel cover has the same color as the wings and wheels (could have been red also) I don't believe that shows a car with red wings and wheels; red would be rendered a much darker tone in period black and white photos. I would suggest they are far more likely to be either ...

Re: Kaye Don for Auction in March

That looks lovely, but surely it's a standard Super Six saloon, not a Kaye Don? I thought the Kaye Don had a special radiator and a 2-pane windscreen.

The engine is from a Willys-Knight, probably a 1929 Model 56A.

Re: New Project

That patch is surely into the crankcase rather than the water jacket? It looks like it's thrown a conrod at some time in the past, but the patch should prove oil-tight.
