Re: Part needed for a '53 4AD
Hi, I believe Louis is referring to this bracket that is holding the spare wheel strap ends. I believe this is the original configuration. Steven's car has also the flat bar extending downwards from the sheet metal wall on top of the wall forward of the spare wheel. Spare_tyre_bracket.JPG Sorry, I h...

Re: Solex Carburetor
Hi Stephen, I had similar problems occasionally when I got my car on the road after restoration. My car is with the twin carb setting, it would idle and work perfectly well but would stall on the first stop on traffic light after a while on a higher speed. I rechecked the carburetor and ignition set...

Re: 4AD Singer Kingpins
Hi Stephen, I have not experienced similar problem on the front wheel bearings but I guess it might be possible that the noise comes from the bearing spacer being loose between the bearings. If that is the case, it may be because of the bearing specification or dimensions are not exactly correct. He...

Re: 4AD Singer Kingpins
Hi Stephen, There are couple of things to consider here: - What is the condition of the kingpin bushes, If the excessive play is due to worn out (lower) bushes, moving the lower bush upwards does not help, you need to have the bushes in good condition. - If you know the bushes are new or checked to ...

Re: 4AD Singer Kingpins
Hi,
One more comment about the crown nut on top of the hub. That nut controls the axial play of the kingpin and tightening that does not help with the radial play that is usually the problem. Over tightening the crown nut just makes your steering stiff.
Regards,
Pekka

Hi Stephen, Here is an exploded view of the 4AD front suspension - http://www.singercars.com/4ax/pnine.html And here are some pictures and dimensional information about the 4AD kingpin. 4AD_front_hub.JPG 4AD_kingpin.JPG 4AD_kingpin_2.JPG 4AD_kingpin_dimensions.JPG The kingpin shaft is 3/4" in d...

Re: 4AD Singer Kingpins
Hi Stephen,
I think the kingpin on the 4AD is specific to Singer as it has the lower wishbone fork integrated to the part. It is not a simple straight axle as in some other cars. I should have a worn out set separate and can take measurements from that for you.
Regards,
Pekka

Re: 4AD Singer Bleeding Brakes
Hi, First about the brakes; I did not have similar problems with bleeding the brakes. I managed to get them working properly with normal bleeding procedure without disengaging the rear brake rod. I would not call them rock solid but very comparable to other non assisted brakes on other vintage cars ...

Re: 4AD Boot Straps wanted
Hi, I made a drawing for the opening in the boot lid inner panel. The drawing is in pdf format in A4 paper format where it fits full size (should fit also on the US B size paper). I have added the hole width and height dimensions into the drawing to help scaling the print to correct size if needed. ...

Re: 4AD Boot Straps wanted
Hi Louis, As a matter of fact, I happen to have an extra pair of boot lid limiting straps (or scissors as I have been calling them). They are new fabricated by myself according the original pattern and dimensions and painted with grey primer, all ready for final paint and installing. Here is a pictu...

Re: 4AD Boot Straps wanted
Hi Louis, I did some investigating on alternative source for the straps and found one source that looks similar that the ones I got from Gregory's. This seems to have similar buckle setup that the original Singer straps I have. http://eshop.lmslichfieldltd.com/epages/BT4011.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Sho...

Re: 4AD Boot Straps wanted
Hi, The boot open almost flat but not quite horizontal. It stays maybe ten degrees up. Here is a period photograph showing the boot lid configuration, the picture is maybe taken at the factory yard in the early fifties and I have the same setup in my car shown in the pictures earlier in this discuss...

Re: 4AD Shifter nut
Hi Stephen, I don't think that nut has a clear tightening torque specified as it is not very critical place. At least I did not use any specific torque value on mine, just a common experience based "wrist"-value suitable for that diameter bolt. If you want to use some specific value, I sug...

Re: 1952 Singer 4 AD accelerator set up
Hi Stephen, My car was mostly dismantled when I got it so I had to figure out the (hopefully correct) way or attaching and routing the accelerator cable as well. I have the car now running and there was no problems with the accelerator functioning. I did not find suitable detail pictures ad cannot t...
