Re: Steering box 4A problems

It appears that your steering arm is not fully seated on the shaft?

Re: Barn find 52 4AD

I too lacked a rear bumper, so substituted a bumper from an early 60's VW Beetle (just the main bumper blade). Had to fabricate brackets as well. I did this as a 'temporary' measure about 10 years ago.....

Re: Links for rear shock absorber 52 4AD

When I rebuilt my rear shocks, I was unable to find suitable links or rubber ball inserts, so I purchased inexpensive low precision heim joints and long coupling nuts and made up my own links. Sure, the heims are exposed to dirt and moisture, but at the low annual mileages I drive, those links will ...

Re: Engine gaskets 51 4AD ANYONE ?

Have you tried the English Singers owners club for gaskets? I've bought a few from them over the years. Also worth checking with vintagecarparts.co.uk or perhaps kipmotors.com in the U.S. These cars are not like working on a vintage U.S. car. Singers are pretty obscure in the U.S. so finding parts i...

Re: Armstrong Shock Absorber fluid

That's the stuff, the Roadster has Armstrong rear dampers. I don't know the amount per damper, and the Motor Trader Service Guide just says to "top up the dampers", but 16oz should easily be enough for both. It's been several years since I topped mine up (after a rebuild) but I remember it...

Re: mechanical front brake issue on 1946

While a picture would be helpful, it seems to me the only way your situation would occur is if the forward bellcrank (the part that swivels at the front and connects the two brake rods) must be installed upside down.

Re: tachometer

I don't believe the Roadsters were fitted with a tach from the factory, so you likely have an aftermarket unit. Most electric techs operate via a input wire from the coil, and also typically require a +12v source, so I would look for loose connections at both the tach and coil ends. A picture of you...

Re: Barn find 52 4AD

I made a quick tool from a cheap 3/8" drive socket (9/16" I think-helps to 'pilot' in the end of the crank) with a 1/4" hole drilled through perpendicular about 1/2" from the the socket end, and inserted a 1/4" rod about 1.5" long. Allows me to use a ratchet with long e...

Re: Barn find 52 4AD

The pressure you are feeling sounds more like excessive blowby, typically from worn or stuck piston rings. Oil pressure would have no impact on crankcase pressure. Have you done a compression or leak down test?

Re: fuel sender

I bought a new sender, for an Austin-Healy 100, I think, which worked great on my 4AD. Just had to bend the float lever arm a bit to match the original. Found the info on which other British cars used the same sender somewhere on this site or the UK Singer site, I believe. Sorry I don't have the act...

Mike,

I had forgotten entirely about the singercars.com 'main' site. I can't seem to find a link from the forum back to that site. Am I missing something?

Re: Barn find 52 4AD

Those headlamps look to be aftermarket units. Original ones have the wiring going through the mounting post and running under the fender. Also, mine have chrome trim rings on the front, but not sure if that's standard or not Otherwise it appears you have found a nicely complete car, which should mak...

Re: Pesky carburetor to manifold nut!

I would be inclined to drill/tap the manifold for helicoil inserts so no nut was required.
