Re: Ring Gear for 4A

Paul, Um...I don't get the "remove the ring gear and rotate 180 degrees". Isn't that the same as just rotating the engine by 180? The starter pinion and ring gear do not engage at the same point, over and over, due to the large variance in diameter between the two. Every time the starter i...

Re: Looking for parts '54 4AD

Forgot to mention, I just use DOT 4 brake fluid from NAPA with no issues. Modern seals are pretty forgiving if running basic DOT 3 or 4 fluid.

Re: Looking for parts '54 4AD

Thomas, These cars are fairly rare so finding a driveshaft assembly will be difficult. Are you sure the shaft is bent? It's not uncommon for the shaft to rub the floor pan if the car is loaded down or the rear springs have sagged. A bent driveshaft will cause horrific vibration at even moderate spee...

Re: Transmission tunnel

Can't imagine it would be usable if anyone did have one. AFAIK they were all made from a molded rubber compound which didn't hold up well to sun and oil exposure. At one time, someone was making reproductions from fiberglass. When I was needing one, I couldn't' find a source so I did a one off in fi...

Re: 1951 Singer 4AD on eBay

"all original" per the description yet the engine is clearly not original and the firewall has been hacked to accommodate.

Still a decent restoration project if you are looking to redo absolutely everything!

Re: Gearbox mounts supplier?

A few years ago when I went looking, I couldn't find a supplier, so I used universal "biscuit" type motor mount pads sourced from Speedwaymotors.com (p/n 7209314-just looked them up) and modified them to suit. You could use pretty much any moderate durometer rubber mount that fits the gear...

Re: 4AD gaskets - manifold and exhaust pipe

A tip for use on fiber type gaskets (whether homemade or OEM type) is to smear a very thin and even coat of high temp RTV gasket maker on the fiber gaskets and allow it to fully dry before installing. This will help with sealing as well as later disassembly. I also find it allows for reuse of the ga...

Re: New gas (petrol) tank

Louis, I had a new one made in aluminum by a company (in the US) I found online who specializes in fuel tanks. Cant' for the life of me remember the name but I'll look to see if I have a receipt. I simply measured up the tank after removing it and they an excellent job of reproducing the original. O...

Re: 1951 4AD rear bumper

As an FYI, an Early VW Beetle front bumper is an easy adaptation for the rear of the 4AD until you can find an original. I'm still running the VW unit, and no one notices.

Re: EXHAUST BRACKET MANIFOLD TO EXHAUST PIPE

On my car (4AD) the exhaust pipe just had a flat square flange welded to the end of the pipe, with a flat gasket in between. 4 studs on the manifold. I believe this was the stock set up for all the dual carb cars. I had a bunch of flanges made from thicker 3/8" stainless steel a few years ago (...

Re: Brake uprade - safety

I agree that the stock brakes leave much to be desired, even after I have completely rebuilt my brakes, and believe they are working as good as can be expected (adjusting the mechanical rear brakes was a lesson in patience!). A unproven conjecture on my part is that MGB uprights (spindles to some) w...

Re: Volvo powered 4AD

Looks like it should be a fun project. Body looks decent, and I really like the look of the wider tires, but too bad about those seats!:) I imagine the Volvo engine trans sits in there fairly well, and plenty of power! I believe there are single sidedraft intake manifolds for that engine that might ...
