Re: Engine colour for 1936 Nine Sports

Black it will be, then, thank you. But the front cover will be bare aluminium and I'll live with the spectre of concours failure. Not that my car is remotely that way inclined. I might suggest to the Singer Owners' Club that a new class is inaugurated for the national weekend: most pleasing and auth...

Re: 1934 Electrinic Ignition

The Distributor Doctor rebuilt the distributor of the 1934 LM Nine I sold a couple of years ago, and incorporated a Pertronix electronic conversion in it. It worked perfectly. I have had Pertronix modules (sold in the UK as the Aldon Ignitor) in several classic cars over the years and have had no tr...

Engine colour for 1936 Nine Sports

I shall shortly be repainting the engine of my 1936 Nine Sports. It's currently (rather flaky) olive green, like the colour used by BMC in the 50s and 60s on Minis, Morris Minors etc. I had an idea that Nines up to about 1935 had black engines but some sort of green thereafter, but Ian Blackburn onc...

Re: Pre-War Singer Races for Prada!

Thanks for the encouragement. First job is to get it running properly so I know what needs fixing and what doesn't, then the renovation and beautification begins. It doesn't need a restoration as such, just a lot of cleaning, detail refinishing and debugging. And reset the rear springs so the axle d...

Re: Pre-War Singer Races for Prada!

And now I have bought it back! I collected it yesterday afternoon. Lots of work to do but it will all be highly enjoyable.

Here's a pic of it loaded on the trailer ready for the journey home. Wheels are now silver following a recent refurb.

The Nine Workshop book explains gearbox variations and has an exploded diagram. You need this book!

Re: Availability of manuals for 1935 LeMans

You can get the 'Nine Workshop Revisited' from the 'books' part of the Singer Owners' Club webshop. It's extremely useful and has quite a lot of technical data. Link below:

The owner's handbook is useful, too, but is insufficient on its own.

Re: Jumping out of second gear on overrun

Will do, this coming weekend. No steering box, sadly – there was one, in desperate need of a rebuild, but it went to the Netherlands.

Re: Jumping out of second gear on overrun

Hi David, among my stash of somewhat used pre-war Singer spares is what I'm fairly sure is a Nine gearbox. Would you like me to extract it from the shed and report on its condition/suitability? It might make a good basis for a rebuild.

Re: Pre-War Singer Races for Prada!

I am 99% sure I used to own that Singer. The owner-but-one after me was Italian and the Singer lived there, without ever losing its UK registration. It returned to the UK in 2013. I owned it from 1988 to 1995 and did various trips to France and Ireland. It became a good sound car during my ownership...

Re: 34 Le Mans horn assembly

I think that is solder where the wire was attached before I dismantled it, and where I re-soldered it during reassembly onto my rebuilt steering column. The bare end of the wire goes in the hole in the middle, and is then soldered into position.

Re: 34 Le Mans horn assembly

Here is a picture of all the parts that made up my car's horn switch. So yes, there is a spring. The wiring goes something like this: live feed to horns, return wire from horns up through the middle of the SLC2 switch and the column, attached to the movable metal part of the horn switch. Pressing th...
